These are the 3 live videos that will actually get you booked as an independent artist

You already know how this goes.

Somebody in the group chat knows a guy. The guy’s got a camera. Everybody agrees the guy is nice. You send four hundred dollars, you shoot on a Saturday, and then you wait. Three weeks. Five weeks. You text. He’s editing.

When it finally lands, the audio is a phone recording of a room, your vocal is buried under the 808, and the whole thing is chopped so fast you can’t watch a single bar of yourself all the way through. You post it anyway because you paid for it. It does nine hundred views and then it just sits there.

I’ve watched artists in this region run that exact loop three and four times before they stop and ask why nothing’s moving. It’s the most expensive habit in the DMV and nobody talks about it, because naming a videographer out loud is how you lose people.

So here’s the useful version instead. Three teams working here right now that I’d put an artist in front of, why, and what to ask any of them before your money leaves your hand.

What I’m actually grading on

Not the reel.

Everybody’s reel looks good. A reel is thirty cuts of the four best seconds of thirty different shoots. It tells you what somebody can pull off on their best day with their favorite client. It tells you nothing about what’s landing in your Dropbox.

Sound is the whole thing. If a team can’t pull a board feed and blend it with a room mic, nothing else matters, because a buried vocal gets your clip closed in four seconds and no amount of color grading saves it. This is the one I’d walk over. Everything else is negotiable.

After that I want to know how many cameras are actually rolling at the same time, and whether I’m getting one full song with no hidden cuts in it. Anybody can chop. Chopping is what people do when there’s nothing they can show you straight through.

Then vertical. If the job comes back and there’s no phone sized cut in the folder, you bought something that only works on a laptop, and the person who forwards your video to whoever books the room is not sitting at a laptop.

And then speed, which nobody asks about until it’s too late. Footage from two weeks ago is promo. Footage from last spring is a scrapbook. Six week turnarounds have killed more momentum in this city than bad cameras ever did.

Alright. No order to these, they do different things.

1. Blue House Productions

Kensington, Maryland. They’ve been at this in the DC, Maryland and Virginia market for more than thirty five years, which in a business where shops appear and vanish inside of two summers is worth saying out loud. They’ve got their own soundstage and studio in Kensington and they’ll work on location too.

Here’s why they’re on the list: they came up through audio as much as video. The music video side is built around multi camera work at the soundstage or on location, finished with color, titles and graphics and a broadcast quality audio mix, and they do events, live performances and multi camera streaming.

Most video shops treat sound like something to clean up later. A place that’s been recording music in this region for decades builds the shoot around it. You hear that difference the second a talent buyer hits play, and buyers make up their mind on sound faster than they do on picture.

bluehouseproductions.com

2.N2 Productions

DC, Northern Virginia and Maryland, with studio space through N2 Studios.

They shoot music videos for artists and labels, and more to the point, they do multi camera live event capture. On the back end it’s editing, color, motion graphics, captions, and they version the finished piece out for TikTok, Reels, YouTube and Shorts.

That last part is why they made it. Versioning is where most artists get robbed without realizing it. You get one horizontal master back, and then at one in the morning you’re in CapCut trying to crop your own face into frame and wondering why it looks like that. If a team builds the vertical delivery into the job, they understand the footage has to travel after it leaves the drive. If they don’t, you’re doing half the work yourself for free.

They run a bilingual crew too, which matters here more than people outside this region think it does.

n2studios.dance

3.LJR Creative

Live video for musicians, festivals and events across DC, Maryland and Virginia, working out of partner studios around the region instead of one fixed room.

They do all types of artist and festival content, but they specialize in capturing cinematic live in studio and concert footage. That’s a narrower lane than almost anybody else here is willing to stand in, and I think it’s the right one, because live is exactly what artists in this market keep failing to produce. No treatment, no location scout, no rented car. A session, shot properly, sound handled like a recording date instead of an afterthought, back in your hands fast enough to send a promoter the same week. They’re fast without sacrificing quality, and you’ll never get left on read with how good their communication is.

Now, full disclosure, because hiding it would be worse: LJR is a partner of mine. Weigh the pick knowing that. I put them here because almost nobody in this region specializes in the thing that actually gets people booked, and they do.

ljrcreative.com

Two more you should know about

Blue Room Productions in Bethesda is a recording studio first, not a video shop. But they do in studio live videography, behind the scenes and interviews, and they’ve taken Best Recording Studio in the Washington City Paper Best Of three separate times. If you’re already tracking there, shooting there is the cheapest good footage you’ll ever get. Ask about it while you’re in the room.

And if you want to see what live performance video is supposed to feel like in this city, go watch Live on the Front Porch. Noochie directs and executive produces it. You can’t hire it, it’s not a vendor, it’s the bar. Notice how much of the effect comes from sound and framing and just letting somebody perform, and how little of it comes from editing.

Ask these before you pay anybody

Screenshot this. A team that gets irritated by these questions is answering them.

Are you pulling a board feed, and how are you blending it with room sound? A shotgun mic on top of the camera is not an answer.

How many cameras roll at once, and do I get one full song with an unbroken timeline?

Is a vertical cut included, or is that extra? Get it in writing, because “we’ll take care of you” is not a deliverable.

What’s the turnaround in days, and what happens to that number if I need one clip fast for a show announcement?

Who owns the raw footage? Ask now. Artists usually find out the answer a year later when they want to recut something and can’t.

Can I talk to two artists you shot in the last six months? Artists. Not brands, not weddings, not a cousin’s graduation.

Real talk

You don’t have a video problem. You have an evidence problem.

Promoters and buyers out here are making a money decision with almost nothing to go on. What they’re actually asking is simple: what happens when this person gets on a stage in front of a room full of people? A cinematic video with a rented Charger and a smoke machine does not answer that. Sixty clean seconds of you performing, crowd in the frame, vocal sitting on top, answers it completely.

Book whoever can hand you that.

Everything else is a reel.

From “mission critical” batteries for UPS and medical applications to car batteries to that “weird” battery that you can’t find anywhere else; Central Battery is the place to go. Their service is excellent and the price will likely be the best that you will find locally (at least) too. And that is based on my own experience. They also offer battery recycling services generally at no charge.

Central Battery also supports not for profits like the Virginia Radio Coop home to the independently operated RockHits 92.3, Real Oldies 97.9 The WREN and 101 Jamz community radio stations. They also supply lightly used UPS batteries to are ham radio clubs which support those clubs emergency communications services.

We do thank Central Battery for their support for the 10 plus years that the Virginia Radio Coop has been service Charlottesville. Please consider supporting them. I am pretty sure that you will be glad that you did!

Central Battery is on-line at CentralBattery.NET.

Like this station? Want help it? Want to make some $$ for yourself at the same time? 101 Jamz (101.3 WVAI) is looking for outside accounts underwriting sales people. Sales experience preferred, but not necessary for the right individual. Please call 434 446-4116 or fill out our ‘Volunteer‘ (it is essentially an employment form) form if you prefer. Please note any sales or radio experience that you have..

If you’re wondering ‘What is underwriting?’, it is what you hear on 92.3 XRK and other non-commercial stations telling you about a client and perhaps thanking them for their support. It is similar to a commercial with a few restrictions. We cannot have a ‘call to action’ such as ‘Come by and see us today!’ We also cannot mention a price or say something like ‘Home of the best pizza in town.’ You can say that ‘Our pizza was voted #1 in the latest newspaper survey.’ or similar other factual statements. Most of what can’t be said is generally viewed negatively by listeners in any event. Our listeners are far more loyal to our station that they are to most commercial stations as an other offset to what you would be selling for us.

101 Jamz is an equal opportunity employer.

The post Sales & Promotions Help Wanted! first appeared on Hip Hop & R&B & Classics.
